Stretch! Stretch! Stretch!

Throughout my life I have always been instructed to stretch before physical activities. Though there is a bit of debate on the usefulness of stretching before working out it is a fact that stretching will make you more flexible.

The Mayo Clinic published an article highlighting the essentials of stretching.

  • Don’t consider stretching a warm-up. You may hurt yourself if you stretch cold muscles. So before stretching, warm up with light walking, jogging or biking at low intensity for five to 10 minutes. Or better yet, stretch after you exercise when your muscles are warmed up. Also, consider holding off on stretching before an intense activity, such as sprinting or track and field activities. Some research suggests that pre-event stretching before these types of events may actually decrease performance.
  • Focus on major muscle groups. When you’re stretching, focus on your calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck and shoulders. Also stretch muscles and joints that you routinely use at work or play. And make sure that you stretch both sides. For instance, if you stretch your left hamstring, be sure to stretch your right hamstring, too.
  • Don’t bounce. Bouncing as you stretch can cause small tears in the muscle. These tears leave scar tissue as the muscle heals, which tightens the muscle even further, making you less flexible and more prone to pain. So, hold each stretch for about 30 seconds. Repeat each stretch three or four times.
  • Don’t aim for pain. Expect to feel tension while you’re stretching, not pain. If it hurts, you’ve pushed too far. Back off to the point where you don’t feel any pain, then hold the stretch.
  • Make stretches sport specific. Some evidence suggests that it’s helpful to do stretches tailored for your sport or activity. If you play soccer, for instance, you’re more vulnerable to hamstring strains. So opt for stretches that help your hamstrings.
  • Keep up with your stretching. Stretching can be time-consuming. But you can achieve the best benefits by stretching regularly, at least two to three times a week. If you don’t stretch regularly, you risk losing any benefits that stretching offered. For instance, if stretching helped you increase your range of motion, and you stop stretching, your range of motion may decrease again.
  • Bring movement into your stretching. Gentle movement can help you be more flexible in specific movements. The gentle movements of tai chi, for instance, may be a good way to stretch. And if you’re going to perform a specific activity, such as a front kick in martial arts, do the move slowly and at low intensity at first to get your muscles used to it. Then speed up gradually as your muscles become accustomed to the motion.

5 Worst And Best Things To Eat At McDonalds

McDonalds is one of Americas largest fast food chains and they are everywhere. Their prices are affordable and when your in a rush, the taste is acceptable. I myself stopped off at one when I was in a rush and got something I thought wouldn’t be too bad. After that I got to thinking…was the meal I chose (3 piece chicken selects and side salad w/o dressing) worse than I thought it was?

I did some searching and Lifehacker already compiled a list of the 5 best and worst foods to eat at McDonalds. The results are as follows

5 worst things to have:

  1. Triple Thick Chocolate Shake – 1160 cal
  2. Double Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese – 740 cal
  3. 5 Piece Chicken Selects – 660 cal
  4. Grilled Chicken Club – 570 cal
  5. Big Mac – 540 cal

5 best things to have:

  1. Hamburger w/o cheese – 250 cal
  2. Grilled Ranch Snack Wrap – 270 cal
  3. 6 Piece Chicken McNuggets – 280 cal
  4. Southwest Salad w/ Grilled Chicken w/o dressing – 320 cal
  5. Filet-O-Fish – 380 cal

It is important to note that these results are from June of 2009 so they may be a little out of date but McDonalds still has many if not all of these menu items still available. So next time you stop off at the golden arches, keep in mind that what you think is the best choice and what really is the best choice may be different.

Spicy Food, So Many Benefits

Many people love spicy food (I know I do), but other than its delicious burn, it can have healthy passive attributes. For those who don’t know, Capsasin is the ingredient in many foods that make things spicy. Several peppers naturally produce the capsasin that adds some heat to some of our favorite dishes. Self Magazine has collected 5 hidden facts about spicy foods that everyone might find interesting.

  1. Weight Loss (can raise metabolism and make bland foods tasty)
  2. Heart Health (Study’s show spicy food eaters have a lower stroke and Heart attack rate)
  3. Cancer Prevention (The American Association for Cancer Research has discovered that capsaicin has the ability to kill some caner and leukemic cells)
  4. Lower Blood Pressure ( Spicy foods increase the blood flow throughout your body)
  5. Fewer Blow-Your-Top Moments(meaning spicy food can release feel good hormones)

Granted spicy food is not for everyone (especially those with sensitive stomachs), but if your stomach can take it, there are some benefits to reap. Self Magazine’s article is available here: Self’s 5 hidden benefits to spicy food

Coffee: Better For You Than You Think

Somewhere along the line coffee got a bad wrap as being “bad” for you. While not all the effects of coffee are positive (such as dehydration) the research continues on its benefits. According to Frank Hu, MD, MPH, PhD:

“There is certainly much more good news than bad news, in terms of coffee and health,”

Studies have shown patterns that people who drink coffee are less likely to have Type 2 Diabetes, Parkinson’s Disease, and dementia. Fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems, and strokes have also been observed in people who drink coffee.

But like with everything in this world, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. So when you pour your morning coffee, take confidence that you are helping your body, but don’t go overboard.

Weight Loss:Men Vs Women

There is a common belief that men lose weight faster than women. But is this common belief true? The answer is yes…mostly. Men have a genetic advantage because we naturally have more muscle due to testosterone. There is also a school of thought that the reason it takes women longer to lose weight because of food preferences. According to Katherine Tallmadge, RD, the author of Diet Simple. “Men love their meat, and women are attached to carbohydrates,”

But Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, LD has some ways to even the odds for women. Lifting weights at least 2 times a week can help jump start weight loss in women. Having a positive attitude towards weight loss also goes a long way. It is important to remember that everyone in this contest has the same goal, to lose a bunch of weight and feel better about ourselves, so don’t get discouraged if other contestant lose more weight at the beginning of the contest. Everyone’s body is different and we all have different methods that work for us to lose weight.

Its also not all bad news when it comes to how women store fat. Women typically store fat lower on their bodies than men do. This means that men store fat around their heart and liver first which comes with a higher risk of heart disease, the #1 killer of Americans.
