Eat This Not That: 20 Worst Foods In America

There are a lot of bad foods out on the market, but which ones are the worst? Men’s Health’s ongoing series “EAT This NOT That” has compiled a list of the 20 worst foods in America and put them into categories such as:

18. Worst “Healthy” Sandwich

Quizno’s Veggie (large)

1,090 calories
61 g fat (19 g saturated)
2,540 mg sodium

In most people’s minds, “veggie” is synonymous with “healthy,” which is what makes this sandwich such a sly beast. You might think it’s a welterweight, but topped as it is with the trio of mozzarella cheese, Cheddar cheese, and guacamole—which together provide a full day’s worth of fat—this sub fights its way into the big boys’ division. If it’s vegetables you seek at Quizno’s, it’s either the Pan Asian Chopped Salad or a fistful of fat.

There’s more where this sandwich came from: The Craziest Food Creations.

Eat This Instead!

Pan Asian Chopped Salad (regular)

430 calories
17.5 g fat (4 g saturated)
1,915 mg sodium

A Few Good Things About Chocolate

For a lot of people chocolate is associated with cavities, empty calories, and sinful joy…but it can also help your body (in the right amounts)! An article from fitnessmagazine.com lists a few beneficial reasons to eat chocolate:

To kick a cough.

Theobromine, a chemical in chocolate, is as effective at soothing coughs as codeine, a key ingredient in many prescription meds.

To fight cavities.

Theobromine may also strengthen teeth better than fluoride, according to Tulane University researchers.

To tame tummy trouble.

Cocoa contains potent antioxidants that bind to and inhibit a protein in the intestines that causes diarrhea, say scientists at the Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland in California. No wonder it has been used as a remedy since the 16th century.

To save face.

British scientists found that less than an ounce of flavanol-rich chocolate a day may help protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. (Sunscreen is still a must.)

Stress and Weight Gain

Its well known that stress contributes to weight gain…but why? I did some research and the most entertaining answer I found was from Dr.Oz. On his show he goes over how stress releases hormones in the brain that basically feed steroids to fat cells telling them to grow larger. He also goes into ways to reduce stress and an herbal supplument called passionflower. There was also a little segment on how to tell if stress is affecting your fat by feeling how firm it is. It was something along the lines of “Jiggly fat is better than firm fat”.

Check out the show segment for yourself to get the whole scoop on Dr.Oz’s opinion on Stress and fat first hand: Dr.OZ on Stress and Fat

Connection Between Sleep and Weight Loss

For those of you who know me well, you know that I don’t sleep much. This got me thinking about the connection between sleep and weight loss. It turns out WebMD has an insightful article about the subject that puts things in perspective.

Lack of sleep can cause weight gain in a few ways, by affecting our metabolism and our attitudes towards exercise and eating well. When you think about it, how motivated are you to go to the gym or cook a healthy meal when your tired. Chances are you just feel like eating something quick and heading to the couch to relax, I know I have felt that way after a short night and a long day.

the clinical director  of  of the Institute for Sleep and  Wake Disorders at Hackensack University Medical Center, Susan Zafarlotfi, PhD states :

“When you have sleep deprivation and are running on low energy, you automatically go for a bag of potato chips or other comfort foods,”

Metabolism can also be affected by sleep. In the article from WebMD, Michael Breus, PhD, author of Beauty Sleepand the clinical director of the sleep division for Arrowhead Health states:

“It’s not so much that if you sleep, you will lose weight, but if you are sleep-deprived, meaning that you are not getting enough minutes of sleep or good quality sleep, your metabolism will not function properly,” explains

So next time you think about staying up just a few more hours and sucking it up the next day, keep in mind the affect it may have on your weight loss goals.

Product Info: The Shake-Weight…Does it Work?

Shake-weights seem to be everywhere these days, probably due to their incredibly awkward commercial. The question on everyone’s mind is does it work? The answer is yes…kinda.

The Shake-weight is a 2 lbs weight with springs on each side. While using the shake-weight may yield minor results at first, it is still only a 2 lbs weight and your body will get used to it and no longer benefit from its use.

The general consensuses on the internet is that it will give the user a minor muscular gain (not as much as using actual dumb bells) until your body adapts to it. After your body adapts its just like doing the exact same routine without benefiting from it.

For your entertainment, here is the official ad for the original Shake-Weight: Shake-Weight Ad

Cholesterol: What It Is and How to Manage It

Cholesterol is one of those things not everyone thinks about when making food choices. The body needs a little but too much of it could cause some damage if gone unchecked. The following is WebMD’s Definition of Cholesterol:

“Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance made in the liver and other cells and found in certain foods, such as food from animals, like dairy products, eggs, and meat.

The body needs some cholesterol in order to function properly. Its cell walls, or membranes, need cholesterol in order to produce hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat. But the body needs only a limited amount of cholesterol to meet its needs. When too much is present health problems such as heart disease may develop.”

MSN has compiled a list of foods that will naturally lower cholesterol. I have listed the top 5 here:

  1. Oats
  2. Red wine
  3. Salmon & Fatty Fish
  4. Nuts
  5. Beans

Keto (LCHF) intro

Thought some of you might find this interesting. We’re on day 6 of keto and feeling great. I’m never starving, have basically no cravings, and it looks like we’re both losing weight. The food is crazy good too. Last night was bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers and bleu cheese filled mini burgers wrapped in lettuce.

Introduction

LCHF (Low Carb, High Fat) means you eat less carbohydrates with a higher proportion of fat. The most important point is to minimize your intake of sugar and starches. That way you can eat other delicious foods until you are satisfied – and still lose weight.

A number of recent high quality scientific studies show that LCHF makes it easier to lose weight and control your blood sugar. And that may just be the beginning.
The basics

Eat: meat, fish, eggs, vegetables growing above ground and natural fats (like butter).
Avoid: sugar and starchy foods (like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes).

Eat when you’re hungry until you are satisfied. It’s that simple. You do not need to count calories or weigh your food. And just forget about industrially produced low fat products.

There are good scientific reasons why LCHF works. When you avoid sugar and starches your blood sugar stabilizes and the levels of the fat storing hormone insulin drops. This increases your fat burning and make you feel more satiated.

Dietary advice
Eat all you like

Meat: Any type. Beef, pork, game meat, chicken. The fat on the meat is good as well as skin on the chicken. Try to choose organic or grass fed meat if you can.
Fish and shellfish: All kinds. Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel or herring are great. Avoid breading.
Eggs: All kinds. Boiled, fried, omelettes. Preferably organic eggs.
Natural fat, fat sauces: Using butter and cream when you cook can make your food taste better and make you more satiated. Béarnaise, Hollandaise, read on the packages or make it yourself. Coconut fat, olive oil and canola oil are also good options.
Vegetables growing above ground: All kinds of cabbage, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts. Asparagus, zucchini, eggplant, olives, spinach, mushrooms, cucumber, lettuce, avocado, onions, peppers, tomatoes and more.
Dairy products: Always select high fat options. Real butter, cream (40% fat), sour cream, fat cheese. Turkish yogurt. Be careful with regular milk and skim milk as it contains a lot of milk sugar. Avoid flavored, sugary and low fat products.
Nuts: Good to eat instead of candy in front of the television (preferably in moderation).
Berries: Okay in moderation, if you are not a super strict /-sensitive. Good with whipped cream.

Avoid if you can

Sugar: The worst. Soft drinks, candy, juice, sports drinks, chocolate, cakes, buns, pastries, ice cream, breakfast cereals. Preferably avoid sweeteners as well.
Starch: Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, french fries, potato chips, porridge, muesli and so on. »Wholemeal products” are just less bad. Moderate amounts of root vegetables may be OK if you’re not too strict with the carbohydrates.
Margarine: Industrially imitated butter with unnaturally high content of omega-6 fat. Has no health benefits, tastes bad. Statistically linked to asthma, allergies and other inflammatory diseases.
Beer: Liquid bread. Full of malt sugar, unfortunately.
Fruit: Very sweet, plenty of sugar. Eat once in a while, treat it as a natural form of candy.

Once in a while

You decide when the time is right. Your weight loss may slow down a bit

Alcohol: Dry wine (regular red wine or dry white), whisky, brandy, vodka, drinks without sugar.
Dark chocolate: Above 70 % cocoa, preferably just a little.

Drink most days

Water
Coffee: Try it with full fat cream
Tea
